All is not well for brilliant but boorish Dr. Martin Ellingham as the hit British dramedy returns. To Martin's utter disgust, his medical practice remains under official scrutiny because of his pre-existing blood phobia, and he is forced to attend refresher courses starting with phlebotomy. His wife, Louisa, and aunt Ruth urge him to take this risk to his career seriously, but events conspire against him.

Dr. Martin Ellingham is brilliant, dedicated, and highly efficient. He's also brusque, abrasive, and terrified of blood. Once a successful London surgeon, he's now a GP in the idyllic Cornish fishing village of Portwenn, where he's every bit as eccentric as the villagers he serves.

Relocating to the picturesque Cornish village of Portwenn is not what this doctor ordered. After developing a crippling fear of blood, hotshot London surgeon Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes, Manhunt) reluctantly retrains as a GP and opens a practice in the quirky seaside town. There he offends the locals with his surly bedside manner but intrigues beautiful schoolteacher Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz, DCI Banks), sometimes against her better judgment....

Martin fires his receptionist and informs the locals that they can no longer use his waiting room as a social center. In return, the villagers shun him, the cafe won't serve him, and patients cancel their appointments.

The annual Portwenn Players Dance is a highlight of the village's social calendar. Louisa invites Martin, but the doctor turns her down. Martin also pays a visit to a park ranger who believes he lives with a six-foot squirrel.

(Aired in the U.S. as "Nowt So Queer") The news of Martin and Louisa's engagement spreads quickly through the village; Aunt Joan is annoyed to hear it from Dave the postman.

After Pauline steams open a confidential letter addressed to Martin, the news of his departure spreads. Martin attends a conference with Edith, where she assumes they will share a room.
