As Barfield Prison begins to take shape again, Helen hires several new officers and two female employees: psychologist Maureen and educator Zania. Having lied about his marital situation, prisoner Alan is granted home leave for the weekend.

Barfield wakes up to a tragedy involving Alan as Helen prepares for an important visit from headquarters. Maureen leads a drama group, but Helen and the officers believe she's getting too close to Norman. Anthony and dealer Snoopy plan a hit on their tormentor, Braithwaite.

The officers debate Helen's new regulation recommendations, including taking away inmates' phone card privileges. Rehearsals for the musical continue, but Annette worries her pianist is growing too attached to one of the prisoners.

Now reinstated as governor of Barfield, Helen tries to comfort the prison psychologist, Annette. Snoopy's sentence is extended, although he doesn't remember what he did in a drug-fueled rage. Brathwaite receives a visit from his father.

Helen takes a risk in moving Braithwaite back to an ordinary cell. Officer Morgan is summoned to an inquiry into the hostage situation. Snoopy agrees to be an informer in exchange for transfer out of the protected prisoners' wing.

Helen's television appearance doesn't go as planned when she is blindsided by the prison refurbishment costs. Tensions are high as a prisoner attempts to escape, a cell is burgled, and a wealthy new inmate arrives.
