Expo ’74 was the first World’s Fair to focus on environmental issues. In 1974, the greenhouse effect, industrial pollution of water, soil, and air, nuclear waste, deforestation, and loss of wild habitats were of great concern globally. Fifty years later, with only minor action to solve these problems, the planet is experiencing the effects—wildfires, floods, the rise of sea level, hurricanes and tornados, species extinction, social tensions, and dislocation. For those who wish to learn more about the climate crisis, the books on this list have been suggested as a great place to start by our librarians and the League of Women Voters Spokane Area.
